Background & Objectives: Considering the role of choosing the appropriate educational method for the prevention of oral diseases and the prevalence of these problems among students, this study aimed to compare the effect of two training methods of lecture and Practical Show based on the Health Belief Model (HBM) in promoting Oral health behaviors among students.
Materials & Methods: This research was a semi-experimental intervention study. The studied population was 140 students (70 in each of the two intervention groups) sixth grade boys in the first secondary school of Marivan city in 2016, who were selected by simple random sampling. The educational intervention of both methods was presented in 8 sessions. The data collection tool was a demographic profile questionnaire and a standard questionnaire based on the health belief model and oral hygiene behaviors, which were completed in two stages before and two months after the intervention. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 18 software and appropriate tests.
Results: Speech intervention did not cause significant change in any of the constructs of health belief and behavior model (P>0.05), but intervention through practical demonstration caused significant change in perceived intensity and oral health behavior. Also, based on the Mann-Whitney test, there was no significant difference between the scores of the health belief model constructs and oral hygiene behavior in the two groups of lectures and practical demonstrations, before and after the intervention (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Due to the ineffectiveness of the lecture method and the low effectiveness of the practical demonstration method, it is suggested to conduct this study using other educational methods such as role playing and group discussion.
