Background & Objectives: The increasing growth of Alzheimer's disease, in addition to involving the patient, puts a double burden on the caregivers, including nurses and family members. Gradually, the caregivers become move away from personal and social activities. In the long term, caring for a patient causes many problems, including depression and stress in the caregivers. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of the technique of Mind’s Relaxation and Diaphragmatic Respiration (MRDR) on perceived stress and quality of life of Alzheimer disease caregivers.
Materials & Methods: The present study was experimental. In this study, sampling was initially conducted among the caregivers of Alzheimer's patients who were referred to the Alzheimer's Association of Iran (60 caregivers). The participants exhibited mild to higher stress levels. Then, the participants completed questionnaires pertaining to demographic information, SF-36 quality of life, Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale, after that they were randomly divided into two groups: intervention group (n=30) and control group (n=30). The MRDR technique was then taught virtually to the intervention group by the expert and founder of Maham Foundation for Respiration Science (MFRS) over the course of one and a half months, which included 10 sessions. One month after the intervention, both groups were followed up and they completed the research questionnaires again. After the data were collected and entered into SPSS software (version 22), the data were refined, and an independent t-test was employed to compare the mean levels of perceived stress and quality of life. Additionally, a chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was utilized to compare the proportions of qualitative components. All tests were conducted at a 95% confidence level.
Results: The results of this study indicate that in the intervention group, the average quality of life score of the caregivers significantly increased compared to the control group. Additionally, the perceived stress level of the caregivers in the intervention group significantly decreased compared to the control group (P ˂ 0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the present study, it can be concluded that the MRDR technique has a significant effect on quality of life and the perceived stress level of caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, indicating that this technique can be used to improve the quality of life of caregivers.
